Dane Cook is The Fourth Most Influential Man In America [May. 4th, 2007|01:11 pm]

In the previous post of [info]soulbain pointed me to Time Magazine's User-Created Top Most Influential People of the Year. This just terrifed me, and not just because I don't even know who most of them are but because Al Gore and John Mayer are almost exactly as influential as each other yet they pale in comparison to Kiefer Sutherland.

The Pioneer Valley is a bubble that is unnervingly pleasant.

- Has McDonald's become so desperate for business that they have reduced themselves to putting lifesized cars into the Happy Meals?!? That has to be the answer... cause there's no way any selfrespecting person would want to be caught dead in that!!

Yeah. Reminds me of the "Top 100 Bands" contests a radio station did a few years back. I wonder if Sanjaya would have placed as high 6 months ago, or 5 months from now.

Atleast Richard Dawkins was in the top 10.

Yeah Dawkins being in the top 10 surprised me more than anything.

I love that Stephen Colbert made #2, but who in the hell is Rain? I think maybe Time should have defined the word "influential" before letting some of these people vote.

I was afraid that I just didn't know who "Rain" was because I was way out of the loop. I knew Time magazine was losing credibility after naming "You" the person of the year, but I hadn't realized it had gone this far.

Really? Damn, and here I thought the US was the only country. 9.9

I looked up who Rain was after I saw the article, but I hadn't heard of him before that. My point was that being a famous pop singer doesn't make you "influential," it just makes you famous. It seems like the people who voted in the poll didn't give much consideration to the word "influential," and instead just voted for who they liked the best. It wasn't a popularity contest.

This is what you get with a self-selecting sample of internet nerds.

Yay internet polls! I bet some anime forum got people to vote spam for Rain, whoever the hell Rain is. Some J-Pop star?

Wow, that list is pretty disappointing, maybe they will not do that kind of user-input thing again, huh? Forget empowering internet users!
But then again, the year's only half done, maybe when they do it again in November or whatever we'll actually see more relevant names in that top 10. I mean, I know we probably don't have any iconic individuals with glowing halos on their heads, but a K-Pop star as the most influential person of the year? We need to do better. (I suspect that's an effect of voter apathy, too - that and that there are a lot more people in Asia, collectively I think)
