87 (12.1%)

My family prefers freedom!

I might need this information for an upcoming comic, also I am just extremely curious about it while finishing the latest Magical Adventures in Space story.

I'm actually really surprised by what I'm seeing, please be honest with your vote!

Might want to change this to radio buttons so some smarties don't vote for both.

It's not like we're voting for president, this here is a lot more scientific.

I'm in Canada but my cousin just got out of jail... I think he was in for a year or so, statutory rape. He's 29, she was... 13. WINNER!

Some statutory is extremely grey but 29 and 13 isn't. Not sure a year was enough.

I've had uncles and cousins in, but mostly short time stuff in the local jail, as far as I know no one's inside right now.

I'm wasn't sure the webcomic a person reads had anything to do with the criminal activities of the dude their mom's sister married. I also have been reading some stats about prison that seemed a might questionable.

My dad was charged with traficing narcotics when I was a kid but the charges were droped when the guys who ratted on him couldn't point him out in court, other then that a close family friend was in prison for I think 10 years for kidnapping, as far as I know the story was his buddy had a grow op and they used to kidnap street kids make them work the harvest give them like 100.00 bucks and put em back where they found them. True story, the guy used to baby sit me.

For the record these stories come from Canada land.

It's funny that you limit it to first cousins just because it IS my first cousin in prison. She's been in and out, over and over, really, usually for drug stuff, but the last time, it's because she drove the getaway car in a bank heist! I have to admit that's actually kinda cool, but only because you don't actually think stuff like that happens in real life, only movies. Even though it logically must. But still. Yes.

One of my uncles went nuts and shot a Mountie with a crossbow. I don't think he went to jail though I'm pretty sure he went to a psych ward. His son, my cousin, also flipped out on drugs when he was 17 and I believe may have been in jail for a short stint, but then also ended up in a psych ward/group home type setting. Not *exactly* the same but I'm kind of glad they didn't just go to prison for being on drugs and getting messed up, because prison really wouldn't have helped. This was in Canada, btw. So I didn't vote.

I think we need a third option for "Not that I know of!" My family members most likely to be in jail are the ones I am most likely to not know about.

Sadly, I would have to answer yes if the poll was about family members who have had children taken away by the state or who got married in a trailer park with the groomsmen wearing cowboy hats and wranglers.

when limited to first cousins, the answer is no.

(Link)

My uncle did spend a few hours in jail for yelling at his drunk girlfriend not to drive home.

There was an asshole I knew through friends who went to jail for statutory rape.
Also, a teacher who had sex with an 18-year-old student, and was arrested. We don't know what happened to him. It was a shame, because his wife was a doll and he himself was kind of cool.

oh, I also should mention that we don't speak to one of my uncles (I've met him twice), and I don't know him or his kids, so I have no idea on that one front. I feel like we'd have been hit up for bail if he did get arrested, so I doubt that's happened.

Here in New Mexico, after your 20th DWI they drop the charges if you agree to install a breathalizer interlock in your ignition. It isn't until about the 30th or so that the cops actually start writing tickets.

One of my cousins was arrested for drug charges and constantly violates his parole (driving illegally way before Paris made it cool), so he's basically in and out. He might actually be out right now, so I may have inadvertently lied in the survey.

My dad had a coke habit when I was a kid, and got caught stealing money from a charity to fund said habit, but IIRC he never actually spent any time in jail 'cause he was the sole breadwinner for our family. And the community did a hella job sheltering me from this - I didn't find out till six years later.

Don't have anybody in jail right now that I know of, though my cousin Danny is over in Iraq, and I suppose if it occurred to me, I'd wish he was in jail instead.

I had a relavtive who spent a lot of time incarerated, as she was a heroin addict, but she died almost five years ago.
My family also likes to put people in prison! My father, all of my uncles and most of my cousins are cops.
