Help MoveOn, get a t-shirt from me. [Sep. 21st, 2007|09:07 pm]
Previous Entry Add to Memories Tell a Friend Next Entry
For those of you who aren't in the know about the Moveon.org smackdown, here's the short version. MoveOn.org ran an ad last week questioning General Petraeus' testimony regarding everything being hunky-dory in Iraq. Most people know that everything is NOT hunky-dory in Iraq, and if nothing else makes you believe this, the cholera epidemic might be a bit of an insight.

The ad in question featured nothing but facts, and a bit of fairly well known knowledge that the reported "decrease in violence" was due to the report's redefining of what violence means.

The US Senate managed to take time out of their busy Not Doing Anything About The War schedule to pass a resolution condemning the audacity of MoveOn.org to practice, you know, free speech, which basically amounts to the Senate taking a half a day, at the US taxpayers' expense, to scold an independent organization for questioning authority.

Long story short, I have t-shirts, you have money. If anybody donates at least $25 to MoveOn.org between now and Monday, I will send you a free t-shirt from the discontinued pile. Just send proof of your donation and your desired size to jeffrey@topatoco.com and I will personally send you a shirt.

9:17am on Monday Morning and this offer is over -- I wish I could do it longer but my resources are sadly limited! A total 26 people donated $785 -- with the promise of about a hundred more -- during this little campaign (that's been reported to me at least), and that's about $730 more than I could manage to come up with so THANK YOU!!! But just because I don't send you a shirt ain't not reason not to give money to MoveOn.org -- they are a group that actually uses their money to look out for you, not for some fat, white guy who owns some giant-ass company that gets kids in Mumbai addicted to aspartame who has the World's Fastest Yacht.

That's all I came to say. You're awesome and I'm very sad I missed out on my not-exactly-free shirt.

I've heard that he earned that nickname from folks serving under him before he ever became a general.

Not to mention his former boss, Admiral William Fallon, called him an "ass-kissing little chickenshit," but you don't see the Senate denouncing Admiral Fallon.

You know, I'm a reporter, so I have to try and stay (publicly) objective about these things.

But this week in the U.S. Senate, votes on extending leave time for soldiers, cutting off funding for the Iraq War, restoring habeas corpus rights for noncitizens and giving D.C. representation in Congress, were all blocked by the Republican minority.

But then 75 or so senators come together to condemn a ... newspaper ad? The country's government is officially insane. Seriously, no arguments can be made otherwise.

I blame the race for presidential nominations. Everyone's in such a huff to look either Republican (but not W. Bush Republican)or Centrist; the GOP and other conservative loudmouths spin MoveOn as this ultra-left political machine, so not waving an angry finger at them is seen as capitulation to the Communist Party itself, I guess.

The other thing that was noted in the article I read about this dust-up was that while the GOP was very quick to jump on MoveOn about this, they're very reluctant to jump on past attacks on people like John Kerry. Well, how about that.

That's the thing, the Swift Boat campaign against John Kerry did the exact same thing -- criticizing a decorated war veteran -- with the glaring exception that the Swift Boat ads were and have been admitted to being LIES.

This kind of stuff incites such rage in me that I have a hard time knowing what to do.

I wish I knew if there was a better way helping a certain campaign I believe in.

This is actually pretty brilliant (and witty) political commentary.
I know everyone's doing it, but have you thought of having a blog dedicated to your political rants? It would be the only political blog I'd subscribe to.

I am already a member of MoveOn, I worked with them in the 2004 campaign (was unable to do so in 2006 but in 2008 I'll be back, baby!) and they've got some of my money but there is something you may have that I NEED. How much will it cost me (in payments to MoveOn) to get a "Rocktober" shirt? The one with the banjo. Drop me a line at ryanmetz84ATcomcast.net

um this might be niether here nor there, but...

(Link)

i just found another thing for you to be angry about
and i know how much you enjoy being angry

you know the hole blackwater thing
yeah well it is looking more and more dirty
its seems some videos have turned up
of black water killing random people

here is one that i found on you tube
http://youtube.com/watch?v=gJUEUhsImf0
seems like the rule here is just kill any one that gets close by

it nice that not only is black water protected from iraqi law
but it seems that it has been granted by special immunity from united states law by our own government

i guess we have finally brought freedom to iraq
the freedom to kill people with out repercussion
that is a type of freedom right?

um
i want to add my $20 bucks to that pile
i need to wait till pay day to see how much budget room i have
will this offer stay till this friday?

Please tell me this offer will be open for a few more days. I just quit my job and get my final paycheck sometime in the middle of next week. I've been a member of MoveOn for a couple years now but have never had enough spare cash to throw their way (Damn you college tuition!) now the timing is PERFECT!

I bought the original design of the "Flabbergasted Eagle" shirt the day it went live. I can't wait to have another piece of Jeffrey Rowland merchandise that I've also gotten because of political outrage! I hope this offer sticks around for a bit.

Thank you for being so awesome Jeffery.

Thanks for doing this!

In response to the swiftboat problem, we can help by quickly catching those lies and repeating the countering truths as often and forcefully as we can.

(I didn't see the "pickin and choosin" comment, so my most humble apologies sir.)

Definitely get a blog. You've got a very sharp and funny take on life's goey political center.

I think..

(Link)

I think the real reason it's a problem is because moveon received an unfairly discounted price. That is a bit questionable, just as an advertising practice.

What if the Journal featured a 2 page swift boad ad that was purchased for 20 dollars, but wouldn't let moveon buy an add for 10k? That is basically the scenario that is a problem here.

I don't see any problem with the ad (I like it) but I do think that it is a questionable area.... if moveon had paid a more reasonable price (a nonprofit rate or a full rate, or had a reason for a 50% discount) it would seem more unreasonable that they were going after them....

Re: I think..

That is a problem but that's a separate issue. The Senate's vote was regarding the content of the ad and happened before the price thing was known about.

Re: I think..

sorry, but at the end of the day, I think you are doing the right thing by raising them money for all of this. They are a good organization & need our support. If they made a small boo-boo, it's really much smaller than the REAL boo-boo of the Iraq war.
