She's the one with the creek, right?

Juno had the best soundtrack ever.

on kimya dawson | (Link)

one time I went with a friend of mine to see kimya dawson having absolutely no idea what I was getting myself into.
needless to say I got completely lit up and wandered back and forth around the venue utterly confused, and also I think I unintentionally gave my number to some underaged girl.
Jeff Rowland is the Kimya Dawson of web comics?
Do you have something against incredibly precious, deliberately naive lo-fi indie pop?
I remember buying the Moldy Peaches record back when that came out, and after a couple of listens I got extremely tired of the "we're making this sound crappy on purpose because we think it's funny" aesthetic. Especially when Kimya starts laughing during what would otherwise be a very moving song... but, y'know, irony trumps real emotion any day, right?
I guess I am too because she sucks.
Kimya is awesome in my book. We should all be so introspective. Also: "Fuck Bush and fuck this war". Words of wisdom!
I love it when we agree on stuff. Talk about some stupid-assed music.
Oh thank god! I thought I was the only one who thought she was terrible. Now I understand my friends are all just being nice cause her mom called and told them she was dying.
White people fucking love Juno.
did she write that horrible fucking glue song people are always singing along to at coffee shops and Lou Reed concerts?
The thing is...
She's actually super nice and is very sincere about what she does. A lot of the songs she writes are fairly cutesy and child-like, but I think that's the point. There is also a lot of good songwriting in there too, if you care to listen. I guess the real thing I'm trying to say is, she's actually like that. There isn't any pretentiousness going on, it's not irony, and she's a bright, awesome person.
That said, I really don't like her music at all, but attacking her character in a fairly public forum is a bit out of line, and I thought higher of you. Who said anyone was supposed to like her music anyhow? Or are you starting to be persuaded by the legions of 14 year old girls who flock to her shows?
Nah, dude.
If you listen to "Tire Swing", "My Mom", "I Like Giants" and "France" over and over and over and over again, eventually it feels like LSD.

I just discovered Overcompensating. I am now adding you to my friends list. Because your comic is awesome.
Do i need any other reasons?
i wasn't gonna say anything but I feel obligated to even the comments out by saying that YES indeed I do genuinely like her music and much of the music she is involved in. However, NO, I did not like the movie Juno very much at all. It was like a marketing executive decided to merge the indie soundtrack of garden state with the quirkiness of Napolean Dynomite (i cant spell that, sorry), but didnt bother making them blend well together.
also, i despite recent popularity due to that film, I don't really feel like Kimya is at the point of celebrity where its totally okay to just make fun of her outright.
I am kind of in agreement with someone who posted above me. I liked it at first, and I still think 12/26 is a painfully sad song, but I'm a little tired of the schtick. The whole 'We're deliberately trying to suck' thing I dislike, and even the songs by her I legitimately like all sort of sound the same.
I still like it enough to not get rid of it from my playlists and stuff, but it seems like it has a very short period of time before it hits its expiration date and is just kind of lame.
(I very nearly made a 'moldy' joke there. laaaame.)
I ain't a fan of hers but that was pretty unnecessary and also offensive
i love being old enough to have no idea what any of you are talking about.
I think I half expected her to be cute and well...
I always tell people she's the poor man's Regina Spektor.
And fuck, do I ever love Regina. She has considerably more to offer.
Man, I love her. I went into Juno knowing nothing about the movie and having never heard of Kimya Dawson or the Moldy Peaches, and the thing that stuck with me the most after the movie was over was the music. If you take her music just at face value, it makes you feel good. It's happy. And really, what constitutes "good" music anymore anyway? I'm a music major and I can't even answer that question. I think that if the music stirs emotions within you that you prefer, then listen to it.
That's just my little opinion. I actually have no problem with you not liking her, because if everyone liked her she'd be "mainstream", right? :) |
